Definitive.

What are the outcomes for definitive chemoradiation for locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma? The single-arm JCOG0909 study was designed to evaluate outcomes for definitive CRT with surgical salvage in this population. Ninety-four patients with stage II/III esophageal SCC received 2 cycles of cisplatin and 5FU along with 50.4Gy in 28 fractions with an additional 2 cycles of chemo for those who had good response. Overall, 59% of patients had a complete response. Salvage endoscopic resection was performed in 5% while 27% had salvage surgery. Overall survival at 3 years was an encouraging 74%. So CRT with salvage surgery appears an effective approach for patients with esophageal SCC who decline initial surgery. | Takeuchi, Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2022
